“Anorexia nervosa has the highest rate of death of any psychiatric illness. We are now beginning to understand why people develop these disorders, and we are using this information to develop more effective treatment.”
Dr. Walter Kaye was recently recruited to the UC San Diego faculty from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he was research director of the eating disorder program, and where he received a NIMH senior scientist award. Dr. Kaye’s current research is focused on exploring the relationship between brain and behavior using brain imaging and genetics, and developing and applying new treatments for anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

Dr. Terry Schwartz is the Medical Director of the Outpatient Eating Disorders Program at UCSD. Dr Schwartz has been working with eating disorders for 10 years, and is well respected as an eating disorder specialist in San Diego, providing professional education seminars and grand rounds for medical facilities both within and outside California. She worked for 10 years as the Associate Medical Director for UCSD’s outpatient psychiatric clinic, training psychiatric residents, and other psychology professionals. She also served as Medical Director for the UCSD Dual Diagnosis program.

Ali Azin received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Bachelor of Science in Cognitive Science specializing in Human Computer Interaction from the University of California, San Diego in 2004. He currently works in research investigating the behavioral and neurobiological relationship of Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa.

Kerstin Blomquist, M.A., is a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. She is currently completing her clinical internship at the UCSD Veteran Affairs Psychology Internship Program and conducts her clinical work at the UCSD Eating Disorders Clinic as well as at the VA Anxiety and Mood Clinics.

Dr. Curry was recently recruited to the UC San Diego faculty from a local eating disorder program which she designed and implemented over a 4 year period. She is currently the Program Manager of the Intensive Outpatient Eating Disorders Program at UCSD. She received her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Pacific University School of
Professional Psychology, in 1999. She has been a presenter at three international eating disorder conferences and recently presented with Walter Kaye MD and James Locke MD on “The Neurobiology of Anorexia Nervosa Insights into Better Treatments.”

Dr. Kerri Boutelle joined the UC San Diego Faculty from the University of Minnesota, where she was the Director of a child and adolescent eating disorder and obesity program and created and researched treatments for children who are overweight. Dr. Boutelle has been working with youth and young adults who have weight or eating related issues for over 12 years. Dr. Boutelle is the Behavioral Director of the Weight and Wellness Clinic, a clinic for youth (and their families) who struggle with their weight, and leads parenting groups and provides individual and family therapy. Dr. Boutelle also sees patients in the eating disorder program for family based and individual treatment of anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder and EDNOS. Dr. Boutelle's current research is focused on parenting children to reduce weight, parent and child skills for reducing binge eating, and epidemiological studies regarding adolescents who have been successful in weight loss.

Dr. Joy Jacobs is a clinical psychologist at the UCSD Eating Disorder Treatment and Research Center. Dr. Jacobs provides individual, family and group therapy for adults, adolescents, and children with eating disorders (including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder). She has trained in multiple treatment modalities, including Maudsley family therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and interpersonal psychotherapy. Dr. Jacobs is one of the few officially certified providers of Maudsley family-based treatment nationwide and internationally.

Megan Klabunde is the recruitment coordinator at the UCSD Eating Disorder Treatment and Research Program. She recently received her master degree in Clinical Psychology and is currently an advanced doctoral candidate in Clinical Psychology . Megan’s research and clinical interests are in both the study and treatment of Eating Disorders.

Christi Middlesworth provides a full range of administrative support to the UCSD Eating Disorders Treatment and Research Program. She works closely with the Director, Program Manager and Program Staff and is the primary point person for all patient billing, insurance and records management.

Tyson Oberndorfer recently received a Master’s degree in Biomedical Science, specializing in Neuroscience and Radiology, from New York University. He currently works with Dr. Walter Kaye in the Department of Psychiatry at UC San Diego. Mr. Oberndorfer’s interests focus on the application of cutting-edge biomedical technology to learn more about neurological disorders, with the hope of using that knowledge to develop treatments and cures, and to otherwise better the human condition.

Doctoral Student in Clinical Psychology: Ms. Rockwell is the research manager at the UCSD Eating Disorder Treatment and Research Program where she has been working since January 2005. Ms. Rockwell is responsible for management and supervision of several concurrent research studies examining eating disorders, treatment outcomes and assessment.

Dr. Mary Ellen Trunko has spent the past several years training in and treating patients with eating disorders. She has worked with the UCSD Program for Eating Disorders Treatment and Research since its inception, being involved in planning and development of services, delivery of patient care and supervision of junior staff members. With the Intensive Outpatient Program, Dr. Trunko performs comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, handles medication management, and leads a psychotherapy group.

Kate Webb is a registered and Board Certified Art Therapist and a licensed Marriage Family Therapist. She received her Master’s in Clinical Art Therapy from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Ms. Webb has had twenty years of experience in her field, working in a variety of settings, both outpatient and inpatient with a range of populations. She conducts sessions with individuals, families and groups as well as community outreach, supervision, consultation and teaching.

Bridget Whitlow is a Marriage and Family Therapist Intern at the UCSD Eating Disorders Treatment and Research Center. She provides individual, family, and group psychotherapy for both adolescents and adults struggling with an eating disorder in the Intensive Outpatient Program. Bridget’s approach to therapy is integrative, with emphasis on psychodynamic, CBT, and DBT treatment modalities.
