Eating Disorders Program

Carers Sessions

The Carers Program focuses on the aspects of caregiving that parents encounter when caring for a child with and eating disorder. This two-session program was adapted from Skills-based Learning for Caring for a Loved One with an Eating Disorder by Treasure, Smith, and Crane (2007). The goals of the current program are to 1) provide psychoeducation about behavioral and emotional responses of parents towards their child with an eating disorder and encourage parents to discuss their own responses, 2) discuss collaborative problem-solving among parents and identify strategies for improving communication and teamwork, 3) provide psychoeducation with regard to stressors related to caring for a child with an eating disorder, which incorporates a model of carer coping from Skills-based Learning for Caring for a Loved One with an Eating Disorder, and 4) identify stressors particular to the parents and discuss strategies for managing these stressors while practicing collaborative problem-solving in session.
