We accept applications for both clinical and research postdoctoral fellows on a rolling basis. Individuals in our program have the opportunity to train alongside world renowned eating disorder experts. Fellowship programs are individualized to the trainee and opportunities are available in multiple clinical settings to encourage diversity of training. Many of our postdoctoral fellows stay on in permanent staff or faculty positions.
Why Join Us?
We integrate neurobiological research with treatment development, offering fellows a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of brain function, behavior, and treatment approaches. We welcome applicants from diverse clinical backgrounds, including those with experience in anxiety disorders, substance use, trauma, pediatrics, and DBT, who are eager to apply their expertise to the eating disorder population.
Training & Supervision
Fellows receive comprehensive training in evidence-based treatments, including:
- Weekly individual supervision & mentorship
- An intensive orientation to eating disorders
- A 2-day DBT training
- A 2-day ARFID training
- A 2-day FBT training
- Weekly didactics & supervision teams
- Weekly seminars and additional workshops

- Combined Clinical/Research Postdoctoral Positions
-
New insight into neurobiological mechanisms that contribute to symptoms is supporting development of more effective interventions. We are unique in having our faculty and staff focus on combining neurobiological research with treatment development. This is an exciting opportunity for trainees to learn about the brain and behavior while applying these insights to new treatment. This role encompasses the intersection of research and clinical care.
- Clinical Postdoctoral Positions
-
We accept Clinical Postdoctoral Fellows into our Adult, Adolescent, and Pediatric Programs. In this role, opportunities will have the opportunity to lead individual, group, and family therapy on a multidisciplinary treatment team.
One of the strengths of our 2-year postdoctoral fellow program is that we provide in-depth training in evidence-based treatment approaches. Clinical fellows typically cross-train in two different programs spending a year in each to maximize both breadth and depth of training.
Required Qualifications
- Preference for demonstrated experience in providing therapy to individuals with eating disorders at different levels of care, including residential/inpatient, day treatment, outpatient, and IOP.
- Experience in treatment of eating disorder patients OR experience in a related area, such as substance use, anxiety or trauma.
- In-depth knowledge and demonstrated skill in provision of evidence-based individual, group, and family psychotherapy.
- Research Postdoctoral Positions
-
Clinical Research Postdoctoral Fellows
This role specializes in treatment development and treatment outcomes. We are developing cutting edge treatments for eating disorders based on neurobiological and temperament-based research where we examine the delivery of treatment in different settings.
Required Qualifications
- Experience in treatment development and outcomes assessment
- Established track record of publications and grant activity
Neurobiology Research Postdoctoral Fellows
We are seeking postdoctoral applicants with strong research interest and experience in the neurobiology of eating disorders for individualized research training. Our program’s mission is to translate neuroscience into treatment. During their training, fellows will receive hands-on experience conducting neuroimaging research:
- Advanced MR techniques such as the human connectome fMRI protocol
- Arterial spin labeling
- Diffusion imaging
- Functional connectivity
- Neurocognitive studies
- Computational modeling
- EEG
- Testing and developing animal and stem cell models of eating disorders
Fellows will collaborate with leading investigator, Christina Wierenga, PhD and participate in currently funded projects, including fMRI studies of temperament, reward learning, and binge eating, as well as pharmacological studies.
The fellowship offers comprehensive training that spans critical research skills, including grant writing, advanced MR image and statistical analysis tools (AFNI, FSL, R), and manuscript preparation. Fellows gain access to UC San Diego’s state-of-the-art research facilities and resources through the Department of Psychiatry, ranked 7th nationally among research universities for sponsored research.
Program highlights include weekly didactics, interactive lab meetings, and robust multidisciplinary collaboration aimed at advancing evidence-based eating disorder treatment Fellows also benefit from funding opportunities for pilot studies and conference attendance.
Required Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in clinical psychology, neuroscience, bioengineering or related field.
- Preference for strong background and training in cognitive neuroscience and advanced statistics.
- Previous experience with eating disorders preferred
- Experience working with clinical adult and adolescent populations, neuropsychological testing, or programming is desirable
- Rady Children's Hospital
-
The Medical Behavioral Unit at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego, is seeking two postdoctoral fellows for an advanced clinical training opportunity. Our specialized inpatient unit focuses on the medical stabilization of eating disorders using a multidisciplinary approach. The psychology team plays a crucial role in treatment, delivering evidence-based interventions such as Family-Based Treatment (FBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) during acute inpatient care.
Our unit serves children, adolescents, and adults from both national and international referral sources. Fellows will gain intensive training in individual, group, and family-based therapy and may also have opportunities to participate in cutting-edge research, if interested.
Additional Training in Pediatric Psychology
Beyond eating disorder treatment, fellows will gain experience in pediatric consultation-liaison psychology, providing services to neurology, nephrology, rehabilitation, gastroenterology, and hospital medicine teams at Rady Children’s Hospital.
